Expert Auction Bidding Tip: Bid live if you can. If you are interested in an item at a particular auction that you realy want, then it is a really really good idea to be there during the live auction. With computerized proxy bids that you set days or weeks ahead of time, it is easy to just be a little lazy and just rely on these pre-set absentee bids and hope for the best.
The reality, however, is that if you want an item badly enough then it's still okay to put in a proxy bid on your own behalf in advance, but you also should attend the auction via on-line or even in person if possible.
The absolute worst feeling is when you made a bid in advance and then the item sells for just the next highest bid above yours for only a few dollars more. Had you been there live at the auction, you would of had the option to have competed against the other bidder or bidders, especially if it is apparent that they are not too much interested in paying more than you were.
If you attend the live auction, you obviously have to gauge the interest level and it if is an item that going through the roof and it far exceeds what you were willing to pay for, then you respectfully bow out and let the other buyer have the item. This of course, does happen from time to time.
However, there are many times where the other bidders were only looking to go up a little bit more and that is your primary reason to attend the live auction in order to protect your bid from being edged out by just a little bit. If something goes for double for what you wanted to pay, then you won't lose any sleep over it and just hope that the next time a similar come up for auction that you'll have a less enthusiastic pool of bidders where you can get your price. When the item goes for a buck or two more than your highest computer bid on file, that is where you just shake your head and even swear a little bit. Don't let this happen on items you really want and are even a little emotional about. Show up at the live auction when it's an item you really want to acquire in order to achieve success!
